2019 Winter Sports Signups

It may seem a little early for winter sports registration, but we have to let Special Olympics CT know how many we will have training and competing.

Our Alpine sports registration is due to the State office by November 26, so that gives us about 15 days to gather all of the information.

Practices will be starting in January – please check our calendar of events for dates and times (www.OxfordSO.org). Competition will be BOTH Saturday February 23 and Sunday February 24, 2019. If you are unable to make either or both of those days, then you should select “TRAINING ONLY”.

Unified Partners and coaches please sign up also, so we are sure we have enough help and that you will be registered

Coaches: if you plan on helping at competition, please select “COMPETING” on the registration forms.

You may train in multiple sports, but since the competition is on the same weekend, you will have to choose ONLY 1 sport to compete in. If you would like to train in multiple sports then you will need to fill out both forms if that is the case.

Please select the sport you will be training/competing in from the links below:

  1. Alpine -> http://bit.ly/2019OSOAlpineSkiing (This form NEEDS to be filled out by November 25th – there will be NO LATE ENTRIES)
  2. Snowshoe/X Country -> http://bit.ly/2019OSOWinterSports

Depending on the number of Slots/Lift Tickets we are allotted, there is no guarantee that you will be allowed to “TRAIN ONLY” in Alpine. (We also need to make sure we have enough coaches for each sport.)

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact LarryD@OxfordSO.org

2018 Spring/Summer sports signup

If you will be participating in spring/summer training or competition, you will need to fill out the online signup sheet below.

It is EXTREMELY important that you sign up if you plan on competing, since our registration is due on April 18 and our first week of swim practice is after that date.

http://bit.ly/2018OSOSummerSports

It is very important to register, so that we know how many coaches/volunteers we will need.

The last day to register for competition will be Friday April 6, 2018, so please fill this form out as soon as you get it. You should receive an email confirmation after you submit the form.

Only those that sign up for COMPETITION will be registered for the summer games.

It costs Oxford Special Olympics money for every athlete and partner that is registered for competition, so if you register for COMPETITION and don’t show, or change your mind, then we will be out that money, which isn’t fair to anyone.

Sports:

Cycling / Swimming / Track & Field

Oxford Special Olympics will be training in three sports this Spring – Cycling, Track and Field, and Swimming – both Developmental and Advanced. Competition will be at the Special Olympics Connecticut Summer Games on June 8-10, 2018.

You may train in ALL of the sports, but must select only 1 for competition, since the competition will be held simultaneously on the same weekend. If you sign up for competition, then you are expected to attend all of the practices for that sport. If you have too many unexcused absences, then you will be scratched from competition.

All of the pertinent information is included on the form, so please READ IT CAREFULLY.

Special Olympics CT will be offering a cycling coaches training class next week:

Quinnipiac University – North Haven Campus 370 Bassett Rd, North Haven, CT 06473

Cycling Coaches Training following the Summer Games Meeting from 12- 2:30 PM. Please be prepared to bring your bicycle and helmet! Click the link to register by Wednesday, March 14th.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Larry.

Oxford Fit 5

Oxford Special Olympics is excited to announce our participation in the brand new Special Olympics initiative, Fit 5.

Special Olympics International continues to innovate in its drive to improve the fitness, health, and overall wellness of its athletes. Special Olympics Connecticut has been on the forefront, most recently with the Unified Fitness Club, in which Oxford actively participates. Fit 5 is the next step – a multi-week program designed to educate our athletes on how fitness, nutrition and hydration impact their athletic performance and overall wellness. The goal is to provide them with the tools and motivation to make healthier lifestyle choices. Fit 5 focuses on three main wellness areas: physical activity, nutrition, and hydration. Goals for athletes include exercising 5 days per week, eating 5 fruits/vegetables per day and drinking 5 bottles of water per day. Athletes will also set their own goals that they see as achievable.

So what does this mean for Oxford? We will be starting a Fit 5 program, meeting Friday evenings at Oxford Center School, starting April 21 running through June 2. Each week we will cover practical information on fitness and nutrition, share our experiences, and participate in some fun activities. Maybe a walk – maybe a Zumba class. Participants will be asked to track how many days each week they exercise, how many servings of fruit and vegetables, and how many bottles of water they have each day. On the first and last session we will measure height, weight, waist size, and resting heart rate.

Interested? Partners and family are encouraged to sign up and participate as well. You can come for the activities and information even if you are not tracking. Please sign up at the link below so we know how many to expect. And don’t miss the first session on April 21st. Contact us if you have any questions.
